The
Arosa Railway takes you from Chur to Arosa, and a fantastic highlight of the
journey is certainly the Langwieser Viaduct. As leisurely as a tram, the Arosa
Railway chugs through Chur, past the city walls, the Maltese Tower, and the
Obertor Gate, the landmark of the Graubünden capital. But soon, the city stroll
on rails is over. At the city limits, the Arosa Railway transforms into a
mountain railway and winds through the rugged Schanfigg Valley up to Arosa. A
fantastic highlight of the journey to Arosa is the Langwieser Viaduct. The
authentic rolling stock reflects the time period of spring 2007.
The
Arosa Railway:
The
Arosa line is a mountain railway. Tight curves, steep sections, and
correspondingly adjusted speeds characterize the journeys between Chur and
Arosa. Not all RhB vehicles can operate on this line. Between Chur and Arosa,
most trains are operated by the Ge 4/4" locomotives, some as regular
locomotive-hauled trains, some as shuttle trains. The latter always have the
locomotive on the uphill side and the control car on the downhill side.
The
Arosa Express is a special train. It is distinguished not only by its all-blue
livery, decorated with flowers and snowflakes, but also by its comfort. The
first-class carriage is designed as a saloon car with comfortable seats and
large windows. These carriages were created by converting existing vehicles. The
baggage car is also an "exotic" RhB model, and the control car was converted
from one from the old Arosa Railway, which ran on direct current. Trains on the
Arosa Line run almost exclusively continuously between Chur and Arosa. They run
hourly throughout the day. Thus, the crossings are almost always at the same
stations. Only rarely do FAK trains or freight trains run on this line, as the
rare freight cars are added to the passenger trains whenever possible. Only in
St. Peter, where timber is loaded on a separate track, can you occasionally see
a locomotive hauling loaded wagons down to Chur and Landquart.
