InterCity

Anyone traveling on German Intercity trains from 1971 onwards always traveled
"first class"—because second class simply didn't exist on the IC at that time.
But demand was high. So, in 1979, the German Federal Railway's new, improved
Intercity service began operating. From then on, the IC also offered
second-class carriages and, with hourly service, ran significantly more
frequently than before. "Intercity. Every hour, every class." was the German
Federal Railway's advertising slogan at the time.
Even today, more than 40 years later, the Intercity remains an important part of
German long-distance rail travel and has undergone numerous modernizations over
the decades.
This allowed it to successfully hold its own alongside the ICE for a long time
and remain a familiar companion for millions of travelers.
