SBB HVZ-D "LION"

As part of the modernization of the Zurich S-Bahn (project "LION"), 30 Re 420 locomotives were refitted. To make the first generation of S-Bahn trains (DPZ) accessible to disabled people, the SBB replaced the existing intermediate carriages with new low-floor double-decker carriages. The vacant 2nd class intermediate carriages were modernized and will run during rush hour in combination with two Re 420 locomotives, each of which has also been modernized.

For the rush hour on the Zurich S-Bahn, the SBB needed trains with maximum transport capacity. During the refit of the first generation of double-decker shuttle trains, the previous 2nd class intermediate carriages were replaced with new low-floor ones. Between 2011 and 2015, the SBB received 13 trains for the rush hour, each consisting of 2 universal Re 420 locomotives and 6 to 10 double-decker carriages. For this, the approximately 40-year-old Re 420 locomotives urgently needed a major overhaul and extensive changes.

The LION project is called: "Lifting, Integration, Optimization, Redesign" During the modernization of the DPZ compositions, one 2nd class carriage per composition was replaced with a newly purchased low-floor double-decker carriage (NDW). The 2nd class double-decker carriages that were no longer needed were all overhauled and around 20% were converted into 1st/2nd class carriages. This was then used to put together the so-called HVZ (peak hour) trains. These consist of either 6 or 10 double-decker carriages and are coupled at the front and rear with a modernized Re 420.

This add-on is intended for advanced riders. This is mainly due to the use of stepper speed control and the lack of cruise control.
