Bernina-Express
for
the
Microsoft Train Simulator
With
the "Bernina Express," simtrain presents an ideal complement to Microsoft Train
Simulator and the Heidi Express and Glacier Express routes. This interesting
route leads from St. Moritz to Tirano in the southern Valposchiavo region. The
journey over the Bernina Pass has its own unique charms and highlights. Anyone
who has ever traveled the route from St. Moritz or Pontresina to Tirano in Italy
will always return enthusiastically to the southern part of Graubünden.
The
Route
On the
journey over the Bernina Pass, the train climbs to an altitude of 2,253 meters
above sea level without rack and pinion. A digital elevation model is used for
the first time in this product. The resulting mountain scenery impresses with a
unique sense of depth in the train simulator. Plenty of original rolling stock
(again with regenerative braking), innovative signaling, and challenging
adventures ensure plenty of driving fun.
With
the Bernina Express to the palm trees of Tiranos, past the glaciers of Piz
Bernina!
The
Bernina Line is the only Swiss railway that runs openly over the Alps. There is
no summit tunnel at the Bernina Pass; instead, the "Ospizio Bernina" station at
an altitude of 2,253 meters offers magnificent views of Lake Nero and Lake
Bianco. A short while later, reaching the "Alp Grüm" station, perched on a rocky
ledge, the train descends in truly adventurous curves to Tirano, located at 429
meters above sea level, in the Italian Valtellina. Within just a few hours,
passengers can visually experience all the vegetation zones between the glaciers
of Piz Bernina (4,049 meters above sea level) and the palm trees of Tirano in
Italy (429 meters above sea level). The sheer incredible thing about the entire
route: the elevation difference of 1,824 meters is overcome without any cogwheel
sections. The horizontal distance to Tirano is only 22 kilometers, meaning the
railway has to overcome gradients of up to 70 per thousand. Where this wasn't
sufficient, the engineers had to resort to all sorts of tricks to gain altitude
during the construction of the line. For this reason, the famous circular
viaduct was built near Brusio, on which the train loops like a model railway.
