Gradients of up to 60 ‰, its own power system, a locomotive specially developed for the route and interesting operational processes. With all these things, the Rübelandbahn (originally known as the "Harzbahn") inevitably comes to mind.
On November 1, 1885, the first freight train ran on the Rübelandbahn. This day began the unique history of a route that is still unique in the German rail network. The Rübelandbahn from Blankenburg to Königshütte (Harz) made technical history several times over and, with its "island operation", is still a special jewel of German railway history to this day.
The period depicted in the Train Simulator is probably the most interesting that the route has experienced. During the GDR era, the Rübelandbahn was an economically important route and placed great demands on train drivers and equipment. Around half of the approximately 30 kilometers of track are curved. Steep sections and a hairpin bend make the route a challenge even for experienced train drivers. The most important task of the route was to bring together the products of the ore, lime and wood industries locally in Blankenburg in order to then transport them throughout the GDR.
Since it was already clear at the start of electrification that the line would remain an island railway for a very long time without an electrical connection to the rest of the rail network, an unconventional type of electrification was chosen that could be supplied from the existing local power grid. Supplying the usual 15 kV and 16.6 Hz would have been too complex. A system with 25 kilovolts and 50 Hz was chosen. The 6-axle series 251 was developed especially for this route and the special power system. This replaced the old and no longer sufficiently powerful steam locomotives. A total of 15 machines were built, 11 of which were in use on the Rübelandbahn until the end of 2004. They are based on the series 211 and 242, also known as "wooden rollers"..
