BLS
Lötschberg Base Tunnel LBT with Upper Valais and with BLS mountain line
The
Lötschberg Base Tunnel LBT
The
Lötschberg Base Tunnel (LBT) is a 34.6-kilometer-long railway tunnel that runs
between Frutigen in the Bernese Oberland and Raron at the Lötschberg Pass,
passing under the Bernese Alps. It was opened on June 16, 2007.
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is the centerpiece of the BLS infrastructure and a
key element of the NRLA (New Railway Link through the Alps). Since its opening
in 2007, the Lötschberg Base Tunnel has become an indispensable part of the
Swiss transportation landscape. The tunnel has shortened travel times from the
Swiss Plateau to the Valais region, and freight trains no longer have to travel
over the energy-intensive mountain route.
